Taghazout VillageÂ
Surf Spots and Historical Roots:
While the early history of Taghazout remains veiled in mystery, oral traditions hint at Berber clashes with the Portuguese in the 16th century. Originally serving as a storage site for shing equipment, the village ourished in the 19th century, witnessing the construction of factories and mosques as the Spanish inuence grew. In the late 1960s, akin to iconic destinations like Calangute Beach in Goa, India, and Kuta in Bali, Taghazout’s southern beach gained fame among young explorers. What once hosted makeshift abodes has transformed into well-appointed hotels and resorts, marking a shift in the village’s landscape.
Municipal Evolution:
Since 1992, Taghazout has stood as the focal point of an independent municipality, encompassing surrounding villages in the hinterland. This evolution reects the village’s journey from a humble shing outpost to a vibrant hub that warmly welcomes travelers and surf enthusiasts alike.
Surf Spots
Hash Point:
Situated conveniently close to Hash Point Surf Camp, this break offers a perfect option for those who nd the 15-minute walk to Anchor Point a bit far. It’s a beginner-friendly beach break, especially when the waves are not too big, and it works on all tides.
Anchor Point:
Famed as one of the most iconic right-hand point breaks in Africa, Anchor Point occasionally offers emerald green barrels on its sandy sections. A 3-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from Taghazout, it’s an intermediate to advanced spot that works best on low to mid tides, but expect some crowds.
Panoramas:
Visible from the roof terrace, Panoramas is popular among beginners due to its
convenience and sandy break. However, when the swell is big and from the right direction, it can transform into a world-class spot. It’s a right-hand point break, just a 4-minute walk away, working on all tides but best at low to mid.
Tamri:
Known as a swell magnet, Tamri is a great option on smaller days, usually offering consistent waves. Best in the mornings before the on-shore breeze picks up, it features hollow barrels for those who know where to nd them. A 40-minute drive away, it’s a beach break ideal for beginners unless the waves are big.
Imsouane:
A true long-boarder’s paradise, Imsouane boasts endless mellow rights wrapping around the point into the protected bay. A 1-hour 15-minute drive from Taghazout, it’s a northerly-facing spot, usually larger than Taghazout, with a mellow right-hand point break perfect for beginners and long-boarders.
Killer Point:
Named after rumored killer whale migrations, Killer Point is a major swell magnet with the ability to pick up the biggest waves. An 8-minute drive or 30-minute walk from Taghazout, it’s an advanced right-hand point break that handles all tides but is particularly impressive on giant swells.
Banana Point and Crocs:
Tucked between Devilâs Rock and Banana Village, this spot offers options for both beginners and advanced surfers. A 10-minute drive away, it features a long easy right-hander for advanced surfers and a wide beach for beginners.
La Source and Mysteries:
Located just 100m north of Anchor Point, La Source and Mysteries break over a rock reef. Intermediate to advanced surfers will nd these spots suitable, working on all tides but especially hollow on low tide. It’s a 5-minute drive or 25-minute walk from Taghazout.
